How to Set Up Sibling or Multi-Class Discounts

Compare three discount options—Auto Discounts, Sibling Discounts, and Coupon Codes—to find the best strategy for your business. Includes scenarios for sibling and multi-class discounts.

📝 Overview

Offering discounts for multiple registrations is a powerful way to incentivize families to sign up for more classes. Sawyer gives you three discount tools to choose from, each with different capabilities. This guide will help you understand your options and select the best approach for your business based on what you want to prioritize—automatic application, flexibility, specific eligibility rules, and more.

The key is understanding how each discount type works so you can match it to your business strategy.

🎯 The Three Discount Options

Before deciding on a strategy, understand what each discount tool does:

  • Auto Discounts

Automatically applied at the cart level when items meet your criteria. Customers see the discount in their cart before checkout. Great for simple, broad discounts that apply across multiple items.

  • Sibling Discounts

Automatically apply when multiple siblings sign up for the exact same scheduled activity (same activity, dates, and pricing type). Set as a percentage discount in Step 3 of activity setup.

  • Coupon Codes

Manual entry at checkout. Offer maximum flexibility with many customizable parameters: percentage or fixed amount, minimum order totals, which items qualify, stackability, and more. Customers must know the code to use it.

👭 Sibling Discount Scenarios

Choose the setup that matches your business model:

Siblings Register for the Same Activity

  • If you want to offer a discount only when multiple siblings sign up for the identical activity, use Sibling Discounts.

  • Setup: Configure the discount in Step 3 of your scheduled activity setup. Enter the discount as a percentage.

  • Note: Sibling Discounts do not apply to Packs.

Siblings Register for Different Activities

If siblings should get a discount regardless of which activities they sign up for, use either Auto Discounts or Coupon Codes.

  • Option 1: Auto Discounts (Recommended for simplicity)

Set a fixed dollar amount discount that applies at the cart level. For example, offer $10 off when a cart contains multiple class registrations. This works automatically without customer action.

  • Option 2: Coupon Codes

Create a code that customers enter at checkout. Offers the most control—you can set a minimum order total, specify which items qualify, decide if the discount applies to the whole order or per item, and more. You can share this publicly or distribute it selectively.

📚 Multi-Class Discount Scenarios

Choose the setup for customers registering for multiple classes:

Multi-Class Discounts (Recommended: Auto Discounts)

  • If you want to offer a discount when a single customer registers for multiple classes, Auto Discounts work best.

  • Setup: Create an Auto Discount with a fixed dollar amount (e.g., $5 off per additional class). You can also enable the option to apply the discount uniquely per registrant so it only applies if that individual meets the qualification.

  • Why Auto Discounts? They apply automatically at checkout without requiring customer action or a code.

Alternative: Coupon Codes

If you prefer a coupon code approach for multi-class discounts, you have the same flexibility as Sibling Discount coupon codes: set a percentage or fixed amount, require a minimum order total, decide how it applies, and more.

🔗 Discount Stacking & Combinations

Understanding how discounts work together is important:

  • What Stacks: A Coupon Code + Sibling Discount can stack on top of an Auto Discount if the items in the cart qualify for all three

  • What Doesn't: Only one Auto Discount OR one Coupon Code can apply per order (you choose one or the other)

  • To Prevent Stacking: If you don't want discounts to stack on top of each other, set up all your discounts to be the same type—either all Auto Discounts or all Coupon Codes.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions or additional details that may not be covered in the main instructions.

Which discount option is easiest to set up?

Click the arrow to view the answer

Sibling Discounts are the simplest—just toggle it on and enter a percentage in your activity setup. Auto Discounts are next, requiring you to set rules once. Coupon Codes require the most configuration but offer the most control.

Can I offer a dollar amount discount instead of a percentage?

Click the arrow to view the answer

Yes, with Auto Discounts and Coupon Codes. Sibling Discounts must be set as a percentage. If you have a dollar amount in mind for sibling discounts, calculate what percentage it represents and enter that.

Can customers use a discount code even if they already have a sibling or multi-class discount?

Click the arrow to view the answer

It depends on how you set it up. If you have both a Coupon Code and Sibling Discount configured, they can stack on top of an Auto Discount, but you can control this. If you want only one discount type to apply, use the same type for both (all Coupons or all Auto Discounts).

Do discounts apply to pack purchases?

Click the arrow to view the answer

Sibling Discounts do not apply to Packs. Auto Discounts and Coupon Codes may apply depending on how you configure them.

What if I want to offer different discounts for different scenarios?

Click the arrow to view the answer

You can set up multiple Auto Discounts (though only one applies per order) or multiple Coupon Codes with different rules. This gives you flexibility to run different promotions or cater to different customer types.

Can I change or remove a discount after customers have already used it?

Click the arrow to view the answer

Yes. You can edit or deactivate discounts at any time. Changes apply going forward, but don't affect orders already placed with the previous discount.
